There are many maps of great cities, but none are as impressive as the 1909 lithograph of the City of Los Angeles by the Birdseye View Publishing Company. Painstakingly drawn by artist Francis Lawrence, the map shows in great detail the majority of business’ and homes in the greater Los Angeles area. Of course, there are many buildings not drawn in or even slightly changed, but the map is 95% accurate and is an historical marker of time travel. Using the wonderful 1909 Birdseye View Publishing Company map to identify a building, a section of the map was matched with a known photograph of an historic building.
With Amalgamated Los Angeles: City Buildings, Volume One, Jeff Moreno comprises a visual and narrative timeline to discusses the history and architectural details of thirty historic buildings in Los Angeles, with map location and historic photographs. This book is a must have for any vintage photography fan.
